Greetings. This is Uesugi Kenshin of Echigo. My apologies, I am unable to the call. Please leave a message and I shall be certain to respond at my next available moment. Domo arigatou gozaimasu.

This is entirely for reference.

In the anime, Kenshin is a minor character for most of the series, as it primarily focuses on Masamune and Yukimura. While the world differs between the anime and the game, Kenshin's personality and abilities do not change. Since the anime is based on the game, I draw from both for reference (only for Kenshin, not the world around him), as well as history.

Uesugi Kenshin, the War God of Echigo.
Sengoku Basara (anime)

Kenshin is the daimyo of Echigo, a north-eastern province in Japan during the Sengoku (warring states) period. He's considered the God of War because of his military genius and his strong devotion to the war god Bishamonten. His rivalry with Takeda Shingen is also legendary.

Kenshin is rather effeminate with a love of flash and flair. He speaks using Keigo, a very formal and eloquent form of Japanese. He's generally calm and polite and would prefer to settle disputes over sake. He spends a lot of his time drinking sake (and could probably outdrink most people) and watching cherry blossoms or the snow.

Crossing him in battle is a very bad idea. He is known as the god of war, a strategic military genius who's skills are only paralleled by Takeda Shingen. He is calm and ruthless, doing whatever is necessary to protect Echigo. However he does this all with grace and honor. Kenshin's sword skills are quick and precise, hardly a wasted strike, and is surprisingly strong for his small thin stature. He also controls ice.

- the historical figure. Kenshin shares much of his personality with the historical figure. Both were incredibly heavy drinkers, strategic geniuses, and rivals with Takeda Shingen. The ages are different as historically he died long before the events of the anime. (Basara isn't exactly accurate with character ages.)

Season 1
Season 2

The anime begins with a clash between the legendary rivals, Kenshin and Shingen. Masamune and the Date interfere with their clash, fighting with Yukimura instead of Kenshin, forming a rivalry of the two. Kenshin and Shingen eventually have to call their battle a draw with no decisive victor.

Some time later, during Nobunaga's rise to power, Keiji Maeda visits Kenshin and the two become fast friends. Keiji tells Kenshin of his plans to bring the generals of the East together to stop the Demon King. Kenshin agrees and joins forces with the Takeda to siege the Oda from the east. Their path is blocked by Ieyasu Tokugawa and his forces. A battle ensues after a failed attempt to get Ieyasu to join the alliance against the Oda. Unfortunately the Oda don't come to the aid of the Tokugawa and instead turn against Ieyasu's forces, forcing all the parties back east. Kenshin leaves the wounded at Kai under the care of Shingen's forces and retreats back to Echigo.

The respite is brief as Nohime, disguised as a Takeda ninja, sneaks in to Echigo then attempts to kill Kenshin. He's fast and she misses her mark, but when she aims for Kasuga, Kenshin throws her out of the way and takes three bullets in her wake. He recovers after the Oda fall to the joint forces of the East, lead by Katakura Kojuro, and Masamune and Yukimura.

Some time after the fall of the Oda, the forces are at each other again, this time in a three-way battle between Kenshin, Shingen, and Masamune. Their battle is interrupted by the arrival of the Toyotomi. Shingen and Kenshin make haste to retreat when Masamune attempts to take Hideyoshi Toyotomi head on.

The respite once again is brief when Kasuga brings word that the Maeda are on their way to take down Echigo, Kenshin retaliates, intercepting the Maeda forces himself with a small group while the rest of the army head to Kaga. The maneuver is effective and the Maeda retreat to defend their home. They intercept the Uesugi forces and after a battle between Keiji and Toshiie, Kenshin tells the Maeda to withdraw. Both forces part ways.

Kenshin later stalls Masamune's advance to Osaka. His reasoning is to remind Masamune of his fierce battle to unify Oshu, an event which caused many casualties, so that he would continue on to Osaka stronger and with more resolve.

Kenshin stays in the north afterward for some time until during the Toyotomi siege on the entire country. The Uesugi beat the force from the south quite easily then turned to fight the ambush from the north, lead by Mitsunari Ishida. The two leaders clash and are quite equalled in speed, precision, and skill. The results of the battle aren't stated, but the two forces end up parting ways.

Kenshin returns to the north. Eventually Yoshihiro Shimazu comes to visit and befriends Kenshin.

[ Personality ] :
Kenshin is extremely polite, refined, and cultured. He uses the honorific -dono when addressing lords and ladies but with his own people, he uses no honorific yet continues to use extremely polite speech (most likely expressing his closeness with his clan). He is very gentle and tender with Kasuga (which always sends her into fits of ecstasy all inclusive with rose petals and blushing). He even holds her in his arms while sitting on his horse. Kenshin seems amused by her odd behavior and simply smiles softly whenever it happens. Keiji claims it's because he's in love with her, though Kenshin has never denied or verified the claim, though he did take three bullets for her, which nearly killed him in the process.

Kenshin is generally a calm and pleasant person. He almost immediately befriended Maeda Keiji and the two talk as if they'd been friends for years. He smiles a lot and enjoys sitting on the walkway looking at the cherry blossoms while drinking sake. Nothing seems to rattle him. He always keeps a calm demeanor in and out of battle. Kenshin also tends to keep rather unusual company: the ninja sent to kill him but fell in love with him, the samurai who believes he's invincible (though quite clearly not), and a wandering vagabond who wants people to just get along (but will kick ass and take names, if necessary). Another oddity to note is that Kenshin does not have any retainers.

Despite his gentleness and pleasantness out of battle, Kenshin is cold and calculating in battle. If given the choice, however, Kenshin would prefer to settle the matter with as little bloodshed as possible, yet when the situation isn't right for that ideal choice (which is usually the case), he is ruthless and fights to be completely victorious. Kenshin also does make alliances if he finds the ally honorable and that the alliance would benefit him and Echigo. He fights on the battlefield alongside his troops, only away from them once when he was nearly killed by Nohime. His fighting style is graceful and very powerful, often with a dramatic flair. His ruthlessness and brilliant strategy has earned him the title, War-god of Echigo. There are few who can match his prowess and Kenshin only considers Shingen Takeda as a worthy rival in strategy and strength.

Both historically and in the anime, Kenshin's rivalry with Shingen is legendary. The two have clashed on multiple occasions, neither proving more powerful or more tactical than the other. They consider each other on equal levels of power, skill, and tactics. Each battle ends up in a draw or is interrupted. The two seem to clash for fun more than vying for each others' lands and seem to actually get along as shown when the two join forces in an effort to take down the demon king Nobunaga. They also know when to call it a draw and make haste to retreat, as shown when they were ambushed by Hideyoshi.

Kenshin has a love of flash and dramatic flair. His odd outfit is the most noticeable expression of his flair. Kenshin seems to have an endless personal supply of rose petals. His movements when fighting, his serenading Kasuga, even when he was shot by Nohime are all accompanied by red rose petals. He also seems to have a supply of sparkles somewhere too. His fighting style is no less dramatic. In his battle stance, he stands with his feet spread out more so than necessary, leaning over as if to pounce his opponent like a tiger. He often jumps to impossible heights to launch a surprise attack or simply to attack in general or to cast ice at his opponents. He also has a badass coat which flows behind him dramatically when he fights.

Another odd flair to note, Kenshin really REALLY loves sake. (Even historically this was true!) Instead of the small sake bowl, he drinks sake from a sake bowl the size of a dinner plate. Kasuga always has sake ready for him.

Kenshin is a Buddhist monk and devout follower of the Buddhist war-god Bishamonten. Some of his followers and opponents have even claimed he's an avatar of Bishamonten. The flag his soldiers carry have the first kanji "bi" in Bishamonten's name.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Strengths
Kenshin's biggest strength is his intelligence. He moves and divides his troops in the most efficient and effective manner, creating tactical maneuvers on the fly if the situation does not fall in his favor. His men are highly trained as Kenshin simply shouts out a maneuver and the whole unit seamlessly shifts to the new maneuver. He knows when to attack and when to retreat. He uses the strength of his people to make the best decisions. Kenshin moves with the ebb and flow of battle as if it were second nature. Known as the War God of Echigo, Kenshin is feared by opposing clans on the battlefield, few knowing his pleasant and completely opposite demeanor outside battle.

Despite his rather frail appearance, Kenshin is extremely fast and strong. He is a practitioner of Iaijutsu, meaning that he can fight with both sword and sheath as well as that his movements are incredibly fast, sometimes making his sword appear invisible as he draws it to make a precise slice. All of his movements are precise and graceful, no energy wasted whatsoever.

Weaknesses
Throughout the series, Kenshin shows very little in the way of weakness. His tactics are sound, his fighting ruthless. He holds his allies close and friends even closer. In a way, how dear he holds those strong friendships may be his greatest downfall. To protect Kasuga, he took three bullets for her at the risk of his own life. He told Keiji to not interfere when the Maeda attempted to ambush Echigo. In that particular battle, he told Keiji to stay away because he would have to retaliate to the Maeda army's approach, attacking Keiji's own family. Kenshin did not want Keiji to interfere to save his friend the pain of seeing his friend fight his family and to not have to fight against Keiji. When his closest friends are involved, Kenshin can act somewhat irrationally.

[ Other Important Facts ] :
Kenshin's gender is incredibly androgynous. In a commentary for the anime, the sound director asked the game producer if Kenshin was male or female and he didn't give a straight answer. Apparently everyone just assumes Kenshin is male. (I questioned it myself, too. It doesn't help that his Japanese seiyuu is a woman or that his English voice actor in the game is Freeza). Historically Kenshin never married and adopted two sons instead of having his own which has lead some to believe he was actually a woman in men's clothing. Or at least that Kenshin was actually quite androgynous and beautiful. (One of the recent people to portray Kenshin was Gackt after all. Yes, that Gackt.)

It is also important to note that his appearance under his strange kabuto (which seems more of some kind of head wrap than a practical kabuto) has never been revealed. Even when bed-bound or in casual wear, he continues to wear the wrap. It is likely few have ever seen him with it off. What is known about him is that he appears to be about 20 but is actually years older, much closer to Takeda Shingen's age. His facial features are soft and his entire rather wiry body is almost entirely covered, head to toe.

[ Sample ] :
Everything had felt foreign since the moment he'd woken up. The buildings, the sunlight, the strange sources of light, especially the fish swimming through the sky. Kenshin had figured himself captured, though he hadn't an idea how. He would never be so careless and Kasuga had always been there to watch over him at night. He'd taken a stance to defend himself against who he thought was the enemy only to find them welcoming him, thanking him for coming. When he'd inquired about how he had arrived, why he felt as though he'd fallen into a stream, the answer was simply, "Welcome to Vatheon. Don't drink the water."

That was two days ago. The mark Kenshin had discovered on his cheek had yet to come off. He had no idea how it had gotten there nor did it belong to any known clan in Japan. It was a branding, of sorts, he figured. At first he'd believed it marked him as a foreigner, a gaijin, yet the locals he came across were incredibly friendly.

Within these two days, Kenshin had learned very little about the mysterious land. Any question he asked of the locals was always answered wholeheartedly until the mention of Vatheon came up. That was when the locals simply clammed up. Something was going on here and no one would talk about it, which only left Kenshin suspicious. He decided the best method of action was to act as if nothing were wrong, keeping a keen eye on his back. While he was stuck in a beautiful city such as this, there was no reason he couldn't enjoy the peace (even if worry for Echigo's wellbeing always stuck to the back of his mind). It was a place he'd expect Keiji would love. Peaceful, beautiful, love and friendship instead of the heat of war. Definitely a Keiji place.

Kenshin leaned against the column on the stone wall he'd perched himself on. He'd requested sake from a local shop (which refused to accept his money in return). The shop owner had handed him a cup but Kenshin liked his sake and requested a bowl in exchange. Bowl in hand, he retreated to the wall to simply sit, drink sake, and watch the fish swim by in the sky. It was still an odd sight he hadn't grown accustomed to. Fish in the sky. There was a certain peace to it, like watching cherry blossoms dance in the wind in the spring air. He idly thought of Echigo, imagining Kasuga flailing around in a panic attempting to find him. Hopefully his disappearance wouldn't send his people straight into the heat of war. Senseless war was something he wished to avoid. Then there was Shingen. The great Tiger of Kai would simply have to go rival-less for the time being. Unless he somehow found his way here. That might actually be entertaining.

[ here, have a Kenshin, with sake. ]

I am curious as to why the locals demand I hang "stockings" up. I see no reason to demand my tabi to be hung, yet this Christmas holiday is rather unusual. I do not recall such a tradition the year prior, either.

I simply hope to see snow once again. I so dearly miss it.

May Bishamonten protect us and our allies still at home.

[ Here, have a Kenshin picking grass out of his headwrap. ]

How unusual to simply fall asleep amidst the grass without notice. The curses here are quite unusual, causing such unusual effects. I am quite pleased to have returned to my usual self and that I fell asleep in such a peaceful location. The lake is always quite a pleasant place.

[ Kenshin appears to be younger, his features softer and less defined, though it's hard to tell as he's still wrapped head to toe. His outfit does appear to be a bit looser on him. He's holding a large red sake bowl which looks bigger only because he is smaller. ]

Such an usual curse, restoring me back to the early days of my lordship yet my memories of battles and of this land remain. I had considered this would be another situation where the world around me has gone mad, yet others have retained their memories as well.

Bishamonten watch over us and protect us for the next week.

[ ooc: i had to age him down, because historically he'd be dead if i aged him up any. :/ ]

[ he sits at the living room table with a large red bowl of sake (yes, bowl. not cup) seemingly musing to himself. ]

How anticlimactic. I had expected a battle yet one never came. I find myself desiring more, especially without Shingen-dono to entertain me. Though in retrospect, it is a relief to see the missing return and see this land safe once again.

[ a sip of the sake and a pause ]

I do wonder if it will snow once again.

I do wonder what sort of festival this "Halloween" is. Such an odd name. The decorations are quite odd, as well. These webs about could be a hindrance to movement, though without the presence of the Kraken, such movement will probably not be necessary for at least a few days. Bishamonten watch over the festival so it will go without trouble.

Also, I have noticed many new arrivals. Pity there is yet to be a sign of Shingen-dono or Kasuga.

[ Kenshin seems different. Much more serious and intimidating than his usual calm self. There are reasons he is known as the God of War. He's holding the SFC almost like he's talking to himself, but rarely does Kenshin do something accidentally. It's some idle musings and a prayer for all to hear. ]

I wonder if this creature has weaknesses. It has withstood many attacks of ice and blade. Several have fallen. It is almost as a repeat of facing the Demon King again, though he was defeatable and fell with a combined attack.

May Bishamonten watch over us.

[ he pauses then adds ] I do much prefer squid fried than attempting to wound me.

A pity to see the snow go so quickly. A short-lived winter, far too short.

New arrivals once again flood the bubble of Vatheon. I do wonder if Kasuga or even Shingen-dono could be among them. Perchance has anyone caught sight of a blond ninja wearing black and gold? She is quite crafty and may be very difficult to spot.

[ oh look at this. It's Kenshin making a post OUTSIDE. He's playing with the snow in his hand. Not like a snowball. More like magic as it floats about then wraps his hand before fluttering off. He looks very peaceful and serene. ]

How wonderful this is. The snow has returned at such an unusual season. It reminds me of home, where the snow blankets Echigo every winter. Such a beautiful and serene time it is.

I thank Bishamonten for such a lovely blessing.

I do hope Selphie will awaken to enjoy such a lovely phenomenon.

If one has not died, but simply will not awaken, what sort of remedies will heal them?
echigo_wargod: (hmm)
[ Kenshin appears with a rather large, oversized witch hat. Underneath he still has his usual had wrap, though it is barely visible. He's sitting back from the SFC with the cat on his lap ]

Quite an interesting curse this is, with unusual hats. I do wonder what sort of person would find a hat such as this practical. It seems quite impractical, with the height and the wideness of it all.

Curses are so rarely docile. I do wonder what else may meet us this time around.

[ As he reaches to turn off the SFC, there seems to be a slight smirk on his soft features, though most of his face is covered by the wide brim of the hat. ]

[ the video feed flips on. There's a Kenshin. With a cup of sake (not tea this time). And Shingen Fluff sitting next to the bottle of sake. ]

There are some interesting arrivals this month, including a certain Tiger and a Dragon. Mitsuhide-dono, Motochika-dono, I believe the Tiger from your world.

It seems the curfew was within reason. Another oddity of this bubble in which we dwell, one which cannot die nor take damage yet can be outrun. Such a curious thing it is. I wonder what shall come of this new addition to the populace. Bishamonten, watch over us.
